MAWHINNEY QUITS:

ABBOTT LOOKING FOR HEAD COACH

The John Abbott men's AAA team is looking for a new coach after Scott Mawhinney resigned recently for personal reasons.

Mawhinney was responsible for putting Abbott basketball back on the map during his five seasons as Head Coach, culminating with a bronze medal at the 2007 National Championships.

Three years earlier, he had instituted a fast-paced style that resulted in victories against top teams and an improving record in the win column.

His 4-12 record in '04-'05 was quickly followed up with a 7-7 mark, and then a breakout 10-4 campaign in '06-'07 led by the incomparable Moore twins, Anthony and Gerry.

Not only did the Islanders appear in the national rankings for the first time in many years, the team made the provincials for the first time since 1995, winning silver and qualifying for their first National Championship since 1978.

Mawhinney's team didn't disappoint, capturing a bronze medal that will be remembered for many years to come.  He was rewarded with the 2007 CCAA National Coach of the Year award.

Mawhinney brought success

 back to John Abbott.

The team has since slipped in the standings in the brutally competitive CEGEP AAA league.  But the program's recent winning tradition has laid a nice groundwork for Mawhinney's successor at John Abbott.

EARLY SUCCESS

Mawhinney graduated from Verdun Catholic High School and went on to play and captain the Dawson College AAA Blues before joining the Concordia Stingers.

He then became a devoted coach, leading the Sun Youth Midget boys' team to a provincial championship in 2003.

Mawhinney moved onto Dawson AA where he won a silver medal at the provincials in his first and only year with the squad.  He was named as head coach at John Abbott in March of 2004 at a time when the team had gone a decade without qualifying for the provincials.
