THORNHILL NAMED QSSF MVP

McGill star Matthew Thornhill was rewarded with a spectacular season by being named the Quebec University Basketball League (QUBL) player of the year.

The native of Ile-Bizard led the league in scoring with an 18.3 points per game average despite playing the year with a broken nose.

Thornhill has lived up to his reputation as a sharpshooter, placing second in the conference in three-point percentage (45.8 per cent) and averaging 2.4 makes per game from behind the arc. The fourth-year finance student was also accurate from the free-throw line, recording a 79.3 per cent average.

Thornhill's McGill teammate, Olivier Bouchard of Montreal, earns the nod as the QSSF men's basketball rookie of the year. The shortest player on the Redmen squad at 5'10", Bouchard overcame concerns about his size to find a place in the starting rotation for McGill. The former Montmorency player finished his inaugural season with 9.9 points per game and 3.7 assists. The management student drained 39.8 per cent of his field goal attempts, went 34.8 per cent from beyond the three-point line and drained 79.6 per cent of his free throws.

Eric Cote-Kougnima (Gatineau, Que.) of the UQAM Citadins is the unanimous choice for Defensive Player of the Year. The former CEGEP l'Outaouais standout was third in the conference in steals and ninth overall in blocked shots.

HONOURS FOR OLGA

Earning the nod as the QUBL men's basketball coach of the year is Olga Hrycak, who guided her team to a regular season conference crown and an 11-5 record.

Hrycak, who is in her seventh year as bench boss of the Citadins, has done an incredible building job at UQAM, inaugurating the program in 2003 and taking the team to the CIS Final 8 in only the program's second season of existence.
