It wasn't long
ago that Champlain Saint Lambert were the new kids on the championship
block, but now they're stepping aside for another top dog.
The CEGEP de
Sainte-Foy Dynamiques rode the coattails of guard Robinson Odoch Opong
(25 pts) and won their first-ever provincial championship 83-75 over the
top-ranked Champlain St. Lambert Cavaliers.
More than 800
fans packed the gym at College Ahuntsic and many more were turned away.
They missed quite
a game, as Sainte-Foy shot the lights out, especially in the second half,
when they sank 51.6 per cent of their shots to open up a lead that they
never relinquished.
Dynamiques Head
Coach Eric Segal said the win was historic on many fronts.
"It's not only
our first provincial title, but also our first medal in a provincial AAA
championship," he said after the game. "It's definitely the nicest season in
the history of the Dynamiques. The team had incredible heart this season."
Odoch Opong was
named MVP of the provincials after averaging 23 points and eight rebounds
per game.
By the way --
don't think that you've seen the last of Champlain this season. They're
definitely in line for a wild card spot at the Nationals, which get underway
later this month at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
