Lowdown
It's Year Three of the CPEQ program, and the
Federation's training team is growing more confident with each passing year.
A number of
players from last summer's Quebec team were successfully recruited to the program to make up
for the loss of talented wings Jerome Routhier-Turcotte and Will Archambault.
Guards
Third-year man
Shawn Bowen is primed to be the next big star to come out of this program.
His
confident, solid play at the Nike All-Canada camp earned him a spot on the All-Star team. He'll be
joined on CPEQ by a unexpected backcourt returnee -- 6-3 slasher Ibrahim Appiah. The Sun Youth star
is still trying to get eligible to attend Champlain St. Lambert.
Talented point guard
Kevin Hopkinson has opted to return as well, making this unit very,
very dangerous.
Forwards
Max Craig-Zuyderhoff
is coming along nicely. He can bang inside, and has developed a soft touch from
about 12 feet. At 6-11, he should be the most heavily-scouted high-schooler in Quebec. Champlain
has already expressed an interest.
Sam Emond
is a solid rebounder who plays with energy and should emerge as a top player this year.
The
recruits are, in a word, tall. Jonathan Besserer-Lemay, Kevin Horth
and Matt Michaud are all 6-8.
Outlook
A
reputed boycott by disgruntled high schools apparently hasn't prevented a number of promising
players from joining CPEQ. Equally important is that fact that players are opting to return year
after year.
And several former CPEQ players are
either blossoming in CEGEP or are ready to break out, adding to the prestige of this unique program.
